    Church offers kids a chance to travel back in time

    Children are being invited to travel back in time nearly 2000 years this summer at the Presbyterian Church of Sunnyvale, which is offering "Marketplace 29 A.D.," a unique vacation Bible-school experience. Kids entering the fourth through sixth grades will get the chance to recreate an ancient Middle Eastern marketplace with crafts, food, games, songs and other activities over the course of five evenings, 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., June 19-23.

Both will be held on the church campus, near the intersection of Hollenbeck Road and Fremont Avenue.

    City offers various Latin Dance instruction

    The Sunnyvale Department of Parks and Recreation is offering Latin dance classes. The beginning classes will include salsa, merenque, cumbia and mambo. The intermediate classes will review these dances and include rueda dance, a partner salsa dance done in a "wheel," as a group. The inverted class is a backward version of the beginning class, but the ladies will lead and the gentlemen will follow. Classes begin July 11, and are for ages 16 and older.     YMCA recognizes volunteers

    The Northwest YMCA has announced it 1999 Volunteers of the Year honorees. Ed Niemann has been selected Volunteer of the Year, and David Low has been named Teen Volunteer of the Year. Ervie Smith Brewick also was given special recognition with the Tenth Annual John D. Crummey Legacy Award.

    Host families wanted

    Loisirs Culturels a l'Etranger, (LEC) a Paris, France, nonprofit association is looking for host families for French cultural exchange students this summer. The program will allow Bay Area families the chance to host a student for four weeks in August and allow students to experience the American way of life.

    Host families are not required to be French speakers. They must only provide room and board, along with friendship and understanding. Students will have their own spending money and are covered by their own insurance program. Students are between the ages of 13 and 19, and have some English language skills. A chaperon will accompany the students on their trip to and from the U.S. and will remain in the area.

    Bishop Elementary 1976 time capsule to be opened

    Bishop Elementary School is looking for students who were in Kay Mushalik's fourth, grade class in 1975-76. These students placed a time capsule in the library with many memories from that time, with instructions that it be opened at noon on June 1, 2000. In order to honor this effort, the school will open the capsule at the specified time. Participants are asked to come to Bishop School at 11:45 a.m. for the ceremony.

    Summer Shakespeare camp offered

    The organizers of the San Francisco Shakespeare Festival will offer a camp for local 8 to 14 year-olds July 17-28 at Lincoln Elementary School, 21710 McClellan Road in Cupertino.

    The camps offer a complete theatrical experience, culminating in a final performance for family and friends. The program is designed to introduce youngsters to the Bard, promote creativity, high self esteem and a greater appreciation of the humanities. The camps are staffed by professional actors and educators trained by the Festival. The camper to counselor ratio is kept at 10 to 1 to insure a quality, personalized experience.

    The camp runs Monday through Friday for two weeks, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Enrollment is $295 per camper. Additional aftercare is available for an additional $75.

    The Sleeping Beauty in Sunnyvale

    Summer Rep, the California Theater Center's summer repertory, announces the first production of the 2000 season, "The Sleeping Beauty".

    Adapted by company founder and general director Gayle Cornelison, the play opens July 1 and will run in repertory with Communicating Doors, Black Coffee, and The Importance of Being Earnest.

    All plays are at the Sunnyvale Community Center Theater, 550 E. Remington Dr.
