New banners to fly in gym at Fremont
By Dick Sparrer
If it hasn't been a banner year in 2000 for athletics at Fremont High School, it soon will be.
Fremont will be unfurling banners to honor the athletes and teams of seasons past on May 24, 7 p.m., in the high school gym.
The event, hosted by the Fremont Athletic Boosters, will honor the 1969 boys tennis team that won a league championship, and the boys swimming teams of 1963 and 1976 that each won league titles.
A third banner presentation will honor Kirk McGowan, who won Central Coast Section titles as a swimmer for Fremont in 1976 and '77.
McGowan won CCS titles in the 100-yard and 200-yard freesytle events in both 1976 and '77.
The former CCS champ is expected to attend the night's event, along with his former coach, Roger Edwards.
Terry Cress, who coached Fremont to the 1969 boys tennis title, will also be on hand on Wednesday night. Cress is currently a successful tennis coach at Monta Vista, where he led the Matadors to their third straight CCS title this spring.
Knights split at CCS
A postseason that started so promisingly ended very abruptly for the girls softball team from The King's Academy last week.
The Knights opened the CCS Division III playoffs with a convincing 13-2 victory over Carmel, but lost a game later 3-0 to Half Moon Bay to fall out of the competition.
Junior sensation Kathryn Neufeld sparked the Knights to the win over Carmel. She went the distance to toss a six-hitter, striking out 13 along the way, and she also helped the club at the plate with a double and a triple.
Junior Cecily Gordon was the big hitter for the Knights with a double and three singles to drive in two runs in the win.
Senior Katie Shockey had three hits to drive in a pair of runs for King's and junior Angela Guidi had three hits. Senior Kirsten Corstorpine ripped a double.
King's scored in every inning on the road to the win and led 11-0 heading into the bottom of the sixth before Carmel scrambled for a couple of runs.
Things didn't go quite as well for the Knights against Half Moon Bay on Saturday. King's didn't score at all, and HMB touched Neufeld for two runs in the fourth and an insurance run in the sixth.
Neufeld, who doubled to account for one of her club's two hits, was tagged with the pitching loss. She still finished the year with a 20-5 mound record.
The split left the Knights 21-5 for the year.
Mustangs fall
Aaron Mansfield put together a couple of outstanding back-to-back performances, but the Homestead boys volleyball team could manage just a split last week.
Unfortunately, the loss came in the Central Coast Section championship match against Bellarmine, and the Mustangs were forced to settle for second in the CCS.
Still, the Mustangs managed to get to that title match, and they did it in impressive fashion.
Mansfield hammered home 20 kills to lead Homestead to a 15-4, 15-7, 15-12 win over Mount Madonna in the CCS semifinals. Kavon Hassani-Azad, Josh Cavin and An-yen Hu were other kill leaders for Homestead in the win.
But Homestead lost 15-9, 15-13, 7-15, 15-8 to Bellarmine a match later to settle for second overall. Mansfield had an impressive night with 33 kills. The senior sensation also had eight digs for the Mustangs.
Hassani-Azad supported with 15 kills for Homestead.
The Mustangs wrapped up the season with an impressive 37-3 record overall.
