Adkins, Daphnis sisters star at CCS

    By Dick Sparrer

Brian Adkins may have had better days. But the Cupertino senior would be hard pressed to remember when.

After all, not only did Adkins win a couple of Central Coast Section swimming titles last Saturday, he clinched the two gold medals in CCS record-breaking times.

Aphrodite and Artemis Daphnis of Homestead joined Adkins in the CCS winner's circle. Aphrodite Daphnis won a pair of events and Artemis Daphnis added a first and a second to lead the Mustangs to a team third in the section meet held last weekend at Santa Clara International Swim Center.

    Daphnis sisters star

Aphrodite and Artemis Daphnis combined for three firsts and a second, and they also teamed with Heidi Schmidt and Megan Tipton for a win in the 200 medley relay.

Their effort led the Mustangs to a team third behind Mitty (248.0) and Presentation (245.5). The Mustangs finished with 209.0 points.

Aphrodite Daphnis breezed to a win in the 200 free in 1:50.30, good for All-American status, and she took the 100 free in 51.39, good for All-American consideration.

Artemis Daphnis cruised to a victory in the 500 free in impressive style. Daphnis finished in 4:51.41 to finish well ahead of the field. The time is easily an All-American qualifier.

She was under the meet record time of 2:02.45 in the 200 IM, but she had to settle for second to Brooke Winkler of St. Francis, who was first in the record-setting time of 2:00.96. Daphnis' finish in 2:01.05 as an All-American time.

Schmidt took third place behind Daphnis in the IM. The sophomore finished in 2:07.49, good for All-American consideration.

The Daphnis sisters teamed with Schmidt and Tipton for a win in the 200 medley relay in 1:48.39. That time qualifies for All-American consideration.

Schmidt and the Daphnis sisters got together with Sharon Hyrne to nail a second in the 400 free relay in the All-American standard of 3:33.06. The foursome finished just three-hundredths of a second behind CCS champ Presentation, first in 3:33.03.

Tipton and Hyrne later teamed with Jenn Lane and Sheena Hovey for a 12th-place finish in the 200 free relay consolation race.

Kathy Hatling and Naoko Watanabe of Cupertino each placed in the CCS finals for the Pioneers.

Watanabe was third in the 100 backstroke in 59.03, good for All-American consideration. She was also a solid eighth in the 200 IM, finishing in 2:10.69.

Hatling was sixth in the 50 free in 25.07.

Placing in consolation races were Erin Schindler of Lynbrook, 16th in 25.68; Katie Williams of Monta Vista, 10th in the 100 breaststroke and 12th in the 100 free; and Samara Silverman of Lynbrook, 15th in the 100 free.

The Monta Vista foursome of Hila Berezovsky, Erica Ullman, Williams and Stephanie Kim finished 11th in the 200 medley relay consolation race in 1:57.38

Lynbrook's 200 free relay team was 14th in the consolation division in 1:45.24. Team members included Tami Norman, Nicole Morasky, Eva Nemirovsky and Schindler.

    Adkins sets records

Adkins was a double winner at the CCS finals, taking the 200-yard freestyle and backing that up with a first in the 500 free.

Adkins shot down lane 5 to a win in the boys 200 free, stopping the watch at 1:38.33 to edge out Will Quist of Bellarmine (1:38.59) for the CCS victory. Adkins' time snapped the old CCS mark of 1:38.89 set by Brian Williams of Pacific Grove in 1990.

Adkins came back later in the meet to win the 500 free in convincing fashion. Adkins' time of 4:25.37 was more than three seconds faster than that of second-place Eric Dilulio of Palo Alto (4:28.45), and it crushed the old CCS record of 4:25.79 set in 1984 by Troy Dalbey of Gunderson.

The two outstanding times posted by Adkins in the finals were well under the automatic All-American qualifying standard of 4:32.88.

Adkins singlehandedly led Cupertino to a top-15 finish in the CCS team standings. The Pioneers finished 15th overall with 40 points, just behind 14th-place Homestead (41.5).

Diver Gordon Blukis and sprinter Arthur Studzinski sparked the Mustangs to the strong finish.

Blukis finished second in the one-meter diving event. The sophomore rolled up 458.90 points to finish second to sophomore Adam Peterson of St. Francis (478.95 points).

Studzinski sprinted to a sixth in the 50 free in a quick 21.72. Steve Lipinksi of St. Francis led a fast field to win the event in 21.17 with Matt Messmer of Menlo second in 21.22, Eric Lee of Bellarmine third in 21.54, Paul Gyorfi of Carlmont fourth in 21.65 and John Samotyi of Palo Alto fifth in 21.72. Samotyi just touched out Studzinski to claim fifth place.

Studzinski, who came back to nail an eighth in a fast 100 free field in 48.27, won All-American consideration with his time in the 50. His effort helped the Mustangs to a team 14th with 41.5 points.

Placing in consolation races were Anthony Tam of Monta Vista, ninth in the 200 individual medley, 16th in the 100 butterfly; Marcus Chan of Monta Vista, 11th in the 100 breaststroke and 13th in the IM; and Scott Anderson of Lynbrook, 14th in the IM.

The Lynbrook foursome of Anderson, Kevin Eng, Yuji Okamura and Alex Lee finished 10th in the consolation 200 free relay.

Lynbrook finished 21st in the team standings with Monta Vista 24th.

    Diving placers

Monica Maxwell of the King's Academy and Danielle Sermer of Homestead each placed in the top 10 in the CCS diving finals held earlier in the week at Santa Clara International.

Maxwell, a junior diver for the Knights, was sixth overall with 408.05 points, and Sermer, a junior for the Mustangs, was seventh with 402.40 points.

It was Maxwell's effort that helped King's finish in the top 30 at the CCS finals. The Knights finished with 13 points to finish 28th overall in the CCS swimming and diving finals.
