CCS track finals set for Friday

Only the best track and field athletes qualify for Central Coast Section competition.

But only the best of the best advance to the CCS finals.

Both Cupertino and Monta Vista have athletes that fall into that category, and they'll be in the field when the best of the best compete in the CCS finals on May 29, 6 p.m., at San Jose City College.

Nuru Abdella of Cupertino and Veronica Noone of Monta Vista each placed high enough at the CCS semifinals last weekend at San Jose City College to earn berths in the section finals.

Abdella romped to an eighth in the 1,600 meters in 4:24.9 and Noone topped the high-jump bar at 5-2 to advance to the CCS championship meet.

Abdella was coming off of sensational efforts in both the CCS North Subsection and league meets, posting back-to-back wins in the two meets.

The Cupertino distance star was first in the 1,600 in 4:25.96 at the subsection meet. He was also 11th in the 3,200 meters in 9:49.39.

Abdella led a strong Cupertino showing in the subsection event, topping a list of five 'Tino placers in 10 events.

Mike Whitaker was second in the long jump at 22-7 1/2, third in the 100 in 11.28 and sixth in the 200 in 23.19. He also helped the Pioneers to a sixth in the 400-meter relay in 43.60.

Jimmy Dickerson breezed to a seventh in the 110 high hurdles in 15.89 for the Pioneers.

In girls' competition, Kerry Blaschke and Celeste Dunlap each placed at the subsection meet for Cupertino. Blaschke was seventh in the 100 in 12.89 and Dunlap was ninth in both the 1,600 in 5:21.99 and the 3,200 in 11.47.26.

Noone was the lone placer from Monta Vista at the subsection event, but she placed high enough in the jump to advance to the CCS semifinals last weekend. Noone went 5-2 to finish fifth in the meet.

Lynbrook, Homestead and Fremont were all represented among the placers at the North Subsection meet.

Matt Tueller and Nick Tung of Lynbrook each placed high in the meet. Tueller was second in the high jump at 6-2, and Tun was third in the 200 in 22.83 and fifth in the 400 in 51.3.

Pooja Mehta of Lynbrook ended up fifth in the girls' 400 in 59.97.

Drew Morgan and Daniel Seddiqui of Homestead each placed in the boys' division the same day. Morgan was fourth in the 300 intermediate hurdles in 41.12, and Seddiqui was seventh in the 1,600 meters in 4:30.45.

A week earlier, Abdella, Whitaker and Dickerson had each won events to lead Cupertino to the team title when the El Camino Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League held its league finals.

Whitaker was a triple winner for the Pioneers, taking the 100 in 11.35, the long jump at 21-6 and the triple jump at 42.1. He was also second in the 200 in 22.80 and helped 'Tino to a first in the 400 relay in 44.97 and a second in the 1,600 relay in 3:38.3.
