King's Academy's Janna Schroy puts on the tag for an out at second in CCS playoff action.
Knights in CCS playoffs
King's Academy beats Palma 2-1 in round 1
By Dick Sparrer
Only the champion of the Christian Private Schools League won a berth in the Central Coast Section Division II baseball playoffs--and a tenuous berth it was.
King's Academy won the spot, but the Knights were seeded No. 15 in the 16-team field and had to open against powerful Palma, co-champions of the Mission Trail League.
The Knights finished 9-1 to win their league championship, but they were just 16-6 for the year heading into the playoffs against a Palma team that was seeded No. 2 in the division and boasted a 23-5 record for the season.
Hold on... better make that 23-6!
King's Academy upset Palma 2-1 in the first round of the playoffs behind the efforts of ace hurler Dan Carter.
The surprise victory boosted the Knights into the tournament quarterfinals against Willow Glen, champs of the Santa Teresa Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League.
King's lost 20-3 to the Rams in the second round of the playoffs despite getting two hits each from Carter, Andy Elwell and Michael Meng.
It was a tough way for the Knights to wrap up the year, but it was quite a year for King's.
The Knights have much to be proud of in 1997. They finished the year with a 17-7 record, they won their league championship, and they reached the quarterfinals of the CCS playoffs with an upset victory in the first round.
All in all, not a bad year for the Knights.
King's girls fall
The King's Academy girls' softball team won a berth in the CCS Division III playoffs, but the Knights lost their opener 11-4 to San Lorenzo Valley.
King's ran headfirst into a nine-run first-inning rally by San Lorenzo Valley. The Knights gave up just two runs the rest of the way, but they could never dig themselves out of the early hole.
Alison Rodriguez roped a double, and Sarah Fleming belted three hits to lead a five-hit attack for King's. Emily Farray was the losing pitcher, finishing the year with a 6-4 record.
Despite the loss, King's wrapped up a solid season with a 14-5 record in 1997. The Knights were unbeaten in the Christian Private Schools League with an 8-0 record.
