Kids climb on board for summer express
By Pam Marino
Kids are being invited to catch the Summer Express, Sunnyvale's "fun alternative to summer school," in two sessions, June 30-July 11 and July 14-24, at Columbia Middle School, 739 Morse Ave.
Arts classes, sports, computer games, cooking, creative writing, leadership, magic, Spanish and science experiments are just some of the subjects covered at Summer Express. Each class meets for 55 minutes every weekday morning during a two-week session. The classes cost $35 each ($43 for nonresidents).
Summer Express is open 8:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., with four total periods of classes. Kids from first through eighth grade can take just one class or four different classes throughout the morning.
Kindergartners meet together the entire morning for Kindergarten Club, which consists of four different classes: Bookmania, Fun With Numbers, Crafts and Sports and Games.
For first- through third-graders there are 17 classes to choose from; fourth- through eighth-graders can select from 24 different classes.
Arts classes for first- through third-graders include crafts, dance, drama and pottery. Sports classes for that age group include basketball, gymnastics, karate, rollerblading, soccer, swimming, tennis and a sports clinic.
Fourth- through eighth-graders can take all of the above classes as well, except for basketball and soccer. Other classes available to older children in the Arts and Sports categories include woodshop, cheerleading, golf, roller hockey and an art studio.
Busing is available throughout Sunnyvale for Summer Express. For more information, registration forms are available at the Community Center, 550 E. Remington, or call 730-7341.
