Sunnyvale helps local teens 'trip out'

Sunnyvale's popular Trip Out program, which takes elementary kids to local attractions on days schools are closed, is being extended through the summer and even includes a trip for entire families in July.

"The trips we are taking this year are all trips that have been a success in the past," says Paula Bassett, a youth services assistant for the city's parks and recreation department.

Four beach/water-themed trips just for kids are planned in July and August. On July 10 staff will be taking kids to Shadow Cliff Beach and Waterslide; on July 25 they will be going to Seacliff Beach; the Aug. 7 trip is to Santa Cruz Beach & Boardwalk, and on Aug. 21 kids will visit Raging Waters.

The trips, which last from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., cost $30 each ($37 for nonresidents). The pick-up and drop-off for the trips is at Lakewood, Ortega, Ponderosa and Las Palmas parks. Kids bring their own lunches; morning and afternoon snacks are provided.

On Saturday, July 19, the staff will take families to the Monterey Bay Aquarium on chartered buses. The trip is open to ages 4 through adult; any children coming alone must be at least age 9. The cost of the trip is $30 for people age 13 through adult, $25 for kids 12 and under ($37 and $32 for nonresidents). Pick-up and drop-off is at the Community Center, 550 E. Remington; the trip runs from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

"Usually our trips fill up. We always encourage people to register as soon as possible," Bassett says. For information call 730-7337.
