Sunnyvale hires new community director

By KATHERINE PETERSEN

The city of Sunnyvale has appointed David S. Boesch of Nashua, N.H., as its new director of community development.

Boesch, who has served as community development director in Nashua since 1988, will succeed Bill Powers, who is retiring from Sunnyvale in June after 19 years in that position.

While in Nashua, Boesch has been responsible for the city's planning, building and urban programs, including economic development and downtown development activities. He also has administered Nashua's privatized local bus system. Nashua is a city with a population of 85,000, located about 40 miles north of Boston.

"David Boesch will be a strong addition to our city staff," said Sunnyvale City Manager Tom Lewcock. "Over his 16-year career in the field of urban planning and development, he has clearly demonstrated leadership and vision which will be very valuable in Sunnyvale as we face the challenges involved in planning our future," Lewcock said.

Lewcock added that Boesch brings substantial experience in developing and implementing municipal programs for total quality management, which will contribute to the city's efforts to keep improving the way it delivers public services.

Prior to serving in Nashua, Boesch served six years as planning administrator in Park City, Utah, and as a city planner in Orem, Utah. A native of the Washington, D.C. area, Boesch received his bachelor's degree in geography and urban planning from the University of Utah and a master's in public administration from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.

"I'm really looking forward to coming to Sunnyvale because of its excellent reputation among cities for its innovation and results-oriented planning and management," Boesch said. "This will be an excellent opportunity for me to become part of a local government team committed to providing outstanding services as well as joining a community that works collaboratively with City Hall."

Boesch lives in Nashua with his wife and son. He is scheduled to start in his new position in Sunnyvale in mid-July.
