Art and Wine Festival returns to Sunnyvale

    By Melissa Matchak

The Sunnyvale Chamber of Commerce, in conjunction with Synopsis Inc., will stage the 27th annual Art and Wine Festival. This year's festival will be held June 2 and 3 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. in downtown Sunnyvale, along Sunnyvale Avenue from McKinley to Evelyn, down Washington Street and along Murphy and Frances avenues.

The festival will feature more than 500 artists and crafts people from all over the country. Wine from eight Bay Area wineries will be available, along with beer and other beverages, and food prepared by local groups. Live music will be performed both days, including a Sunday afternoon performance by headliner Joe Sharino. The main stage and the food court will be located at the corner of Sunnyvale and Evelyn.

The food court will include Polish sausages and jumbo hot dogs, strawberry crepes, nachos, teriyaki chicken, chicken sandwiches, fruit smoothies and more, prepared by local non-profit organizations including the Sunnyvale Child Development Center, the Sunnyvale Sunrise Rotary, the Sunnyvale Elks Lodge, the Sunnyvale Gymnastics Club and more. Del Monte Restaurant will also provide fried calamari pasta.

The cost for glasses and wine or beer pours is unchanged from previous years: $10 for one wine glass or beer stein and two pour tickets, $20 for two glasses and six pour tickets, $3 for each additional pour ticket or $5 for two. Premium wines will cost two tickets for each pour and 2001 festival wine glasses or beer steins will be $5 each. Festival merchandise, including T-shirts, will be available at the festival. The event's organizers ask participants not to bring wine glasses or beer steins from home.

The event's planners are expecting 130,000 people to attend the weekend festival. There will be no designated parking for the event, however, there are spaces available in nearby residential areas. Event planners encourage attendees to take public transportation or ride bikes to the event. Caltrain is a half-block from the festival and there will be a free guarded bike area on the corner of Evelyn and Sunnyvale avenues.
