Chien, Kam place fourth at CCS finals
Seddiqui places at section meet
By Dick Sparrer
The best of the Central Coast Section converged on the track at San Jose City College on Friday to go for the gold.
And while no area athlete struck gold at the rugged CCS event, a few did quite well.
Monta Vista's Diana Chien and Fremont's Kristen Kam each came within an eyelash of earning a trip to the June 2-3 state meet at Cerritos College in Southern California.
Chien soared to a fourth-place finish in the long jump at 17-7. The talented Monta Vista jumper ended up less than an inch out of third place. The top three advance to state. Charlene Deardorf of Mt. Pleasant went 17-7 3/4 to just edge Chien in the battle for a state berth.
Kam was close, too. The Lady Bird star raced to a fourth-place finish in the 300-meter low hurdles in 44.60. Lindsay Scarborough of San Lorenzo Valley finished three-tenths of a second ahead of Kam to claim the No. 3 spot and the state berth.
Lynbrook, meanwhile, had three athletes place in four events at the CCS finals.
Kim Gleason heaved the discus 119-10 to finish fifth for the Lynbrook girls.
Barrett Bryson was sixth in two events for Lynbrook. Bryson flew to a sixth in the long jump at 21-4 and was also sixth in the triple jump at 43-11 1/4. Teammate Jason Sicklesteel topped the 110 high hurdles in 15.32 to finish in sixth place for the Vikes.
Daniel Seddiqui was Homestead's top finisher at CCS. Seddiqui ended up 10th in the 1,600 meters in 4:35.64.
