City gears up for Art and Wine
This year's 25th annual Art and Wine Festival will differ from other years for Luis Garcia. Instead of being simply an observer, he'll be selling his signed photography datebook as one of the 500 artists participating in this year's fair June 5 and 6.
Two years ago, Garcia planned to go to China with World Press as one of 10 photojournalists chosen out of over 400 applicants. But after postponing the trip for a year, the company dissolved and canceled the excursion.
Instead of abandoning his hope of capturing China on film, Garcia's colleague Nancy Wu, through her contacts in China, arranged a new itinerary. Sunnyvale Community Services (SCS)--where both Garcia and Wu work--sponsored the trip.
When Luis returned, he compiled his photos from the month-long trip into a weekly datebook titled "China: Portraits of a Timeless Land."
"It was a great experience going to China," Garcia said. "And I'm very glad I got to go."
Local companies donated both the production costs and the design efforts, and all proceeds from the sale of Garcia's datebook will benefit SCS.
In addition to Garcia's photography, this year's Art and Wine Festival-- one of the largest street fairs in the Bay Area--will feature other art, crafts, regional wine, beer
and food. In recognition of the 25th anniversary of the fair, participants can buy commemorative crystal wine glasses.
"And we're hoping it will be beautiful, beautiful, beautiful, and everyone will come," Leslie Lawton, chairwoman of the board of the Chamber of Commerce said.
The event will be held this Saturday and Sunday in downtown Sunnyvale at Washington and Mathilda Avenues from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day. Tickets are $15 each or $25 for two. For more information, call (408) 736-4971.
Digital Clubhouse project
The Digital Clubhouse Network is hosting a special project during June to help veterans and others who remember the World War II period come together and create digital three-minute movies based on their personal memories. Contents can include photographs, letters, memorabilia, music tapes, and other materials. The finished productions will be put on CD or VHS video tape to be shared with friends and family.
The project is designed to serve as an acknowledgment of the veterans and others who lived through the war. For more information, contact Lu Zentner at 481-0880.
Gymnast lands victory
Alysse Zrebski, a 12-year-old at Resurrection Junior High, won first place on the uneven bars in her division at the Northern California Gymnastics Championships. Zrebski trains at Airborne Gymnastics in Santa Clara five days a week for over three hours each practice. Zrebski also placed second with her floor routine and fourth in the all-around. Her team of 10 girls, which her parents say draws from most of the Bay Area, placed first overall.
