Grand jury indicts rape suspect

A Santa Clara County grand jury has handed down a 23-count indictment, including 10 sexual assault charges, against Romel Reid, a man believed to be the so-called "Peninsula rapist."

Reid allegedly assaulted at least 13 women along the Peninsula, including one Sunnyvale woman who was grabbed and raped near Sunnyvale Medical Clinic while she walked to work Sept. 8.

According to court documents, the indictment returned May 29 includes three more victims than the prosecution originally alleged Jan. 17.

Reid's attorney, Santa Clara County Deputy Public Defender Stephen Elrick, said he didn't know Barrett had sent the case to the grand jury, which conducts its proceedings behind closed doors.

Elrick speculated, "Perhaps he didn't want me to talk to the witnesses."
