Old-fashioned picnic held at city's Senior Center
The Sunnyvale Senior Center invites people 50 and older to step back in time for an old-fashioned picnic, June 9 at noon in Washington Park. The picnic will include a barbecue and a guitar and banjo performance by Mike Halloran. Tickets for the event, which must be purchased by noon on June 7, are $8 and are available at the senior center. Call 408.730.7360.
Joseph B. Anderson Jr. speaks at De Anza College
Joseph B. Anderson Jr., a decorated military officer and successful CEO at several major corporations, will be a featured speaker on June 7 at an afternoon open forum and an evening commencement ceremony at De Anza College. At 2:30 p.m. in Conference Room B of the Campus Center, Anderson will speak on his life, answer questions and show "The Anderson Platoon," an award-winning documentary about the infantry platoon he commanded during the Vietnam War. The public is invited to attend the free forum.
Anderson will be the keynote speaker at the college's 14th Annual Student Transfer Celebration, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at the same location. His keynote address will be "The Importance of Education in Terms of Societal Changes."

Parks celebrate start of outdoor recreation season
To celebrate the beginning of park season, the Santa Clara County Parks and Recreation Department is sponsoring "Go Outside and Play" Day on June 9, during which all vehicle entry fees are waived and the public is encouraged to enjoy the outdoors and the activities the parks provide.
The more than 40,000 acres of parks in the county will have special giveaways including Frisbees, magnets and bumper stickers. The parks will also be selling Venture Passes for autos and boats, which will allow unlimited access to county parks for 12 months from the month of purchase. The pass is $50 and will be offered for sale at every county park and sporting goods stores in the area.
County parks include Almaden Quicksilver, Alviso Marina, Anderson Lake, Calero, Chesbro Reservoir, Hellyer, Coyote Lake, Ed R. Levin, Field Sports, Lexington Reservoir, Los Gatos Creek, Motorcycle Park, Mount Madonna, Penitencia Creek, Sanborn, Santa Teresa, Stevens Creek, Upper Stevens Creek.
