Daphnis sisters shine for Homestead High

Schmidt, Armour help Mustangs win CCS

    By Dick Sparrer

There wasn't much question which team would come out on top when it came time to add up the final points for the girls teams at the Central Coast Section swimming and diving championships.

The Daphnis sisters of Homestead saw to that.

The two Homestead seniors combined for six first-place finishes to lead the Mustangs to the section championship, setting four CCS records in the process.

Artemis Daphnis won a pair of events in record time and was also part of two record-setting relay teams. Aphrodite Daphnis posted a pair of individual wins and was part of both winning relays.

Junior Heidi Schmidt and freshman Abra Armour joined the Daphnis sisters on the two winning relays. Schmidt also won an event and placed in another, and Armour placed in two events for the Mustangs.

Homestead ran up 234 points to win the team title at CCS with Palo Alto a close second at 227 1/2.

The Daphnis sisters teamed with Armour and Schmidt to win both the 200-yard medley relay in the meet-record time of 1:45.69 and the 400 freestyle relay in the meet-record time of 3:28.46.

The Mustangs' time in the 200 medley relay ranks as the fastest time in the nation this year and the 400 free relay time is the second-fastest time in the nation.

Artemis set section records with wins in the 200 individual medley in 1:59.93 and the 500 free in 4:46.38.

Aphrodite matched her sister's showing with a pair of individual wins at the finals. She took the 200 free in 1:49.63 and won the 100 free in 51.17.

Schmidt joined the Daphnis sisters on the victory stand with a first in the 100 breaststroke in 1:04.27. She also added a fifth in the 100 butterfly in 58.52.

Armour starred in her first ever CCS championship meet. The freshman was third in the 100 free in 52.48 and fourth in the 50 free in 24.77.

Danielle Sermer joined in the scoring for the Mustangs by finishing ninth in the 1-meter diving event. Sermer ran up 295.80 points in the finals to finish in the top 10. The senior finished the preliminaries and finals with a two-day total of 412.70.

Naoko Watanabe of Cupertino also had a big day at the CCS finals. The 'Tino senior finished fourth in the 100 backstroke in 58.88 and she added a sixth in the 200 IM in 2:09.31.
