Firebirds honor past, current athletes

The banners honoring the greats in Fremont athletic history hang from the walls of the school's gym.
And as athletes gathered beneath those banners last month to share recognition for both the recently completed spring season and the school year, two more Fremont greats took their rightful places on the gym wall.
Former Central Coast Section cross country champions Jack Larson (1968) and Beth Bartholomew (1990) were honored when a banner was unfurled to recognize their achievements.
The ceremony was all part of the spring sports night sponsored by the Fremont Athletic Boosters that featured the presentation of awards to outstanding spring athletes, and the first-ever presentation of the Fremont Medal of Distinction awards to deserving athletes.
The Medal of Distinction was the idea of Fremont athletic commissioner Monica Blankenship. And a packed house in the Fremont gym recognized the 23 medal winners with warm approval.
"It was so classy," said Fremont athletic director Pat Lawson of the award. "It really turned out to be a great thing...tons of applause and very moving."
"My goal was to get more students involved in after-school sports and to extend recognition for the minority sports," wrote Blankenship in her explanation of the award. "This medal is for the most dedicated athlete of each sport at Fremont."
To be eligible for the bronze medal, athletes had to: always be at practice, be on time, be cheerful, encourage other teammates, have an eager desire to succeed, go the extra mile, and be passionate about their sport.
