Kawcynski seals candidacy for state Assembly

Sunnyvale Councilmember Stan Kawczynski will be the Republican candidate for the 22nd District state Assembly seat in November after placing second in the June 2 primary.

Kawczynski, the only Republican in the four-candidate race, received 32.5 percent of the vote.

Incumbent Elaine Alquist (D) from Santa Clara collected 60.9 percent of the 62,773 votes cast.

Now, Kawczynski will focus his sights on Alquist, the former high school math teacher from Santa Clara.

Kawczynski has pledged to focus his campaign on three issues: education, transportation and crime prevention.

"We've tried everything and have only made matters worse," Kawczynski said of the California education system at the time he announced his candidacy in February. "We used to be the envy of the world."

The 22nd District covers Sunnyvale, Mountain View, Santa Clara, Campbell, Saratoga, Cupertino, Los Altos, and Northwest San Jose.
