Summer sports camps keep kids in action
By Dick Sparrer
It's just about summer camp time. And for those youngsters who would rather pitch baseballs than pitch tents, or who would prefer to shoot a basketball than shoot a bow and arrow, there are plenty of camps right here in the area.
Girls' basketball clinic
A summer basketball clinic for girls in grades 7-12 will be held June 23-July 24, 1-3 p.m. each day (Monday through Thursday each week), in the gym at Saratoga High School. The cost is $150 per player.
Saratoga girls' varsity basketball head coach Bret Yeilding will serve as camp director, with former top players assisting as clinic staff members.
For more information, call Yeilding at 1-415-585-5883.
Williams hoop camp
The annual Sid Williams Basketball Camp returns to Fisher Middle School July 14-18. The camp is designed for "motivated players" entering the fifth to ninth grades.
Session 1 for boys and girls entering the fifth and sixth grades will be held 1-3:30 p.m. each day, and players entering the seventh to ninth grades will attend Session 2 from 4 to 7 p.m.
For more information, call 358-9323.
SCU Baseball School
Santa Clara University baseball coaches Mike Cummins and Lou Lucas will host their annual Santa Clara Baseball School with three sessions set for June and July for players ages 9-16.
Session I runs June 23-27, with Session II set for July 7-11. The camp covers basic fundamentals and hitting 9 a.m.-noon, with a special pitching session 1-2:30 p.m. The cost is $100 for the morning session and $50 for the pitching session.
Session III will feature special hitting-only camps July 21-25, 9-10:15 a.m. and 10:30-11:45 a.m. The cost is $50 per session.
The school features individualized instruction in playing defense, base running, sliding and hitting. Each camper receives a T-shirt, and Bronco caps will be given to contest winners.
For more information, call 267-3831.
SJSU Baseball Camp
San Jose State University head baseball coach Sam Piraro will lead the camp coaching staff at the 13th annual San Jose State Summer Baseball Camp at the school's practice baseball field.
The camp, open to boys and girls ages 6-15, will be held in two sessions, July 14-18 and July 21-25, 10 a.m.-1 p.m. each day, and will feature individual drills, group drills, daily scrimmages and individual evaluations.
The camp will cover hitting, fielding, base running, individual positions, and teamwork. The cost is $85 per session, and all campers receive a T-shirt and are eligible for daily camper awards.
For more information, call 924-1254 or 924-1255.
Wrestling camps
Youth wrestling camps return to Los Gatos for the eighth straight year under the direction of Scott Downs, a former Gatos head wrestling coach who remains involved in the program at the high school.
Camps are slated for June 16-20 (beginners to intermediates, ages 7-12) and June 23-27 (advanced, ages 11-16 with at least junior high school experience).
The cost is $100 per wrestler, and camp hours are 1:30-4:30 p.m. each day in the wrestling room at the high school. Each session is limited to 26 wrestlers.
The camp will feature instruction from Downs and Jeff Garlick, the head coach at Fisher Middle School. Wrestlers from the Los Gatos High School program will also assist.
For more information, call Downs at 395-8126 or 354-2730, ext. 259.
