    Reading program for local adults

    The Sunnyvale public library is putting on its first adult summer reading program to encourage adults to read for fun and enjoyment this summer. Participants must be 16 years or older, have a library card and read at least one fiction or non-iction book or listen to one recorded book. One can register for the program at the information desk at the library until Aug. 5.     City has economic prosperity report

    The office of the city manager on May 25 released the second annual report on the economic prosperity of Sunnyvale The office said the city is developing strategies that will strengthen business retention efforts, increase economic investment in the community and provide a high quality of life for the corporate community and the residents of Sunnyvale in a six-part strategy.

    It's now focusing on industry clusters, taking action on recommendations for land use, transportation, education and housing and working closely with downtown businesses during redevelopment.

    The office will also seek to market the benefits of doing business in Sunnyvale, develop actions for the contribution to regional quality of life and encourage strong working relationships among residents and members of the city's business community.

    Association meeting on controversial crematorium

    The Heritage District Neighborhood Association is holding a meeting about the city council's decision to grant a use permit to a crematory, to be built in a Sunnyvale residential neighborhood.

    All Sunnyvale residents are welcome to attend the session June 14 at 7:30 p.m. at 184 N. Sunnyvale Ave.

    New transit center open

    A new transit center has opened up on the corner of Fruitvale and Allendale avenues in Saratoga, used for VTA bus routes 27, 54, 57 and 58. The routes run through Los Gatos, San Jose, Santa Clara, Alviso, Cupertino and Sunnyvale. VTA held a dedication ceremony for the center June 1, and buses began using the center June 2.

    The transit center has a lit passenger shelter, benches, bike lockers, newspaper racks and information cabinets. Trees have also been planted around the center. The new center will not change current bus schedules.
