SJS, SCU host summer baseball camps for youth
By Dick Sparrer
It's been quite a year for Sam Piraro and his baseball team at San Jose State University.
The Spartans had an outstanding 2000 season that led them to a berth in the College World Series in Omaha, Neb.
But don't get the idea that the season ended in Omaha for the Spartans. Because there's some baseball remaining for Piraro and his Spartans this summer.
San Jose State will host its annual summer camp for players ages 6-17 in July at the Spartans practice field across from Kelley Park and Municipal Stadium.
The schedule includes:
Session I, July 10-14-- comprehensive camp, players ages 6-16, 10 a.m.-1 p.m. each day, cost $95 per camper.
Session II, July 17-21-- pitching camp, ages 9-12, 11 a.m.-1 p.m., $125; and hitting camp, ages 12-17, 2-4 p.m., $125 (both sessions $200).
Session III, July 24-28-- comprehensive camp, ages 6-16, 10 a.m.-1 p.m., $95.
Session IV, July 31-Aug. 4-- pitching camp, ages 13-17, 11 a.m.-1 p.m., $125; and hitting camp, ages 12-17, 2-4 p.m., $125 (both sessions $200).
The camps, run by Piraro with the help of assistants Doug Thurman and Dean Madsen and other area high school and junior college coaches, stress fundamentals.
