Labadie brothers toss Giants to title

Giants beat Angels to claim Serra crown

    By Dick Sparrer

Parents struggle to teach their children to share, hoping that it's a lesson their kids will learn at a very young age.

Kevin and Brian Labadie have certainly learned their lesson well. And the Giants of the Sunnyvale Serra Little League are glad they did.

The Labadie brothers shared a 5-hit shutout to lead the Giants to a 3-0 win over the Angels in the Serra major division championship game.

Kevin Labadie tossed three scoreless innings to get the win, striking out three and allowing just three hits. Brian came on to get the save with three innings of shutout relief, fanning five and giving up just two hits.

The Giants had just five hits in the game, but put them together for two runs in the first and an insurance run in the sixth.

    B. Labadie doubled twice and Chayne Schaetzle singled and doubled to lead the Giants offensively. Sean Denny ripped a home run.

Paul Wadensweiler had two of the five hits for the Angels in the loss.

The Giants had earned their place in the championship game with an 8-6 win over the Angels earlier in the week.

Schaetzle singled and tripled, Denny singled and doubled and Ryan Bridge homered to lead the Giants to the come-from-behind victory.

The Giants trailed 5-1 after two innings, but rallied for three in the third and, after giving up a run in the fourth, picked up four more in the fifth to clinch the win.

Darren Ramskov tossed an inning of relief to get the pitching win and B. Labadie threw two scoreless innings to get the save.

Wadensweiler and Tim Vanderet each ripped three hits to lead the Angels at the plate. Charles Hug and Andrew Pardo slapped two hits apiece and Chesley Douglas doubled.

The Angels had to battle back with two straight wins to get into the title game against the Giants.

Hug and William Harryman teamed to toss a 3-hitter in a 9-1 win over the Mets. Hug struck out six and allowed just one hit in three scoreless innings to get the win, and Harryman went the final three frames to pick up the save.

Hug and John Kiel each blasted homers in the win, and Vanderet and Harryman each singled and doubled. Wadensweiler also doubled in the win.

Kevin Strombel homered and Derrick Lee doubled for the Mets.

The Angels had to go seven innings to pull out a 7-6 win over the Rockies to advance to the division championship game.

Hug, Wadensweiler and Andrew Jiang had two hits each to lead the Angels to the exciting victory. Douglas picked up the mound win with an inning of scoreless relief.

Parker Sinclair had three hits, including a double, and Adrian Renaud singled and tripled for the Rockies.

The win pushed the Angels into the division championship game, but they lost 3-0 to the Giants.

The Giants now advance to the District 44 Tournament of Champions. The Serra champs were to open Monday against Campbell with the winner to face Santa Clara Westside on June 21, 5:30 p.m., at the Tri Cities Little League field.

In other first-round games on Monday, Sunnyvale National battled Mountain View, Sunnyvale Southern played Los Altos and Sunnyvale Metro met Santa Clara Briarwood-El Camino.

The tourney semifinals are June 25, 5 p.m., at the Sunnyvale National and Sunnyvale Metro fields with the championship game set for June 27, 5:30 p.m., at Sunnyvale Serra.
