Summer at music school provides for creativity
By Melissa Matchak
In an untraditional take on summertime day camp, The Music School in Sunnyvale offers children, ages 7 to 12, the opportunity to participate in activities revolving around art, music and theater. The six-week creativity day camp includes art, drama, dance and choir classes. The camp's finale a performance by the campers in a musical written by the camp director for the particular group.
Doris Harry, director for The Music School, said the camp offers children the chance for more individual attention than some other day camps, which is why the camp is limited to 12 to 15 students.
The creativity camp offers participants a variety of art activities, including pottery, painting, mask making and more. Harry said participants also create and video their own commercials and write skits, based on costumes they receive to use. The camp also includes singing and games, as other summer camps do.
The Music School's creativity camp runs from July 2 through Aug. 10, Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Cost for the camp is $600, which includes everything, except lunch and before and after camp day care. Private lessons are also available for an additional fee. Scholarships are available for eligible families. The registration deadline for this summer's camp is June 25.
The Music School offers a variety of summer programs, including a music theater class, music for young children, family camp, flute choir and others.
The Music School is located at 728 W. Fremont Ave, Sunnyvale. To register for creativity camp or other programs, or for more information, call 408.739.9248.
