Council approves multimodal transit
On June 13, the city council voted 5 to 2 in favor of four items that will enable the construction and operation of a multimodal transit station. The items included awarding the contract to the construction company and an approval of the budget modification. It also authorized the city manager to execute the cooperative agreement for cost sharing, design, maintenance and operation of the station. Minor amendments included items regarding bicycle standards and elevator maintenance. An additional $1.5 million for downtown development was awarded, due to lobbying by Julia Miller.
The city of Sunnyvale, Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) and Peninsula Corridor Joint Powers Board (JPB) have been collaborating on the station for the past three years. The new station has a planned location site on Evelyn near Frances Street. It will include a multilevel parking structure, a transit station and associated site improvements on JPB and city property. The parking structure will serve CalTrain commuters during the day and downtown businesses in the evenings.
Housing support for city employees
In an effort to recruit senior staffers, the city is helping to pay for their housing. All department directors in Sunnyvale are eligible for loans at five times their salary, with employees putting down 10 percent. With the median home price of $635,000 in Sunnyvale, finance director Mary Bradley said the housing package was very much needed in the hiring of four new senior staffers from out of the area.
