Chorale seeks voices
The Valley Chorale has openings for three experienced bass-baritone voices for the autumn show season. Repertoire for the 12-concert series, locally and on tour, includes classics, spirituals and pops as well as costumed musical theater. Both a cappella and accompanied music are featured. Brew Festival scheduled
The Small Brewers Festival will take place Saturday, Aug. 12, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday, Aug. 13, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. in downtown Mountain View. The Festival features more than 40 microbreweries, more than 100 different beers and continuous live entertainment. Admission is free. A festival glass with seven tokens is $15.

Youth Symphony to tour
The California Youth Symphony, directed by Maestro Leo Eylar, will tour Germany and Switzerland this summer. CYS departs on June 26 to present three concerts. The featured artist for this summer's tour is 17-year-old CYS Young Artist Competition winner Gilbert Hwang.
Prior to the concert tour, CYS will present a "Tour Preview" concert at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 25 at the Spangenberg Theatre at Gunn High School, 780 Arastradero Rd. in Palo Alto. The orchestra, consisting of 100 musicians aged 12 to 18, will present Cello Concert in B Minor by Antonin Dvorak, Porgy and Bess: A Symphonic Portrait by George Gershwin, Polovetsian Dances by Alexander Borodin and Rienzi Overture by Richard Wagner.

Sanborn Park hosts another YSI night hike
The Youth Science Institute has scheduled its first night hike of the summer for June 24, from 8 to 9:30 p.m. The hike, open to adults, teenagers and children, begins at the YSI's Nature Center. Lead by Nature Center manager Patricia Kucker, the hike takes participants through the evening woods and teaches them to use their senses in spotting and identifying nocturnal animals. Children under 10 must be accompanied by an adult. Cost is $5 per person.
The nonprofit YSI provides science education classes, hikes and day camps to develop children's understanding of and appreciation for the interrelationship between humans and the natural world. Night hike reservations are required. For more information, call 408.867.6940 or 408.356.4945.
Slide program reveals the best backpacking spots
As part of its ongoing series of community lectures and programs, REI Saratoga has invited outdoorsman Ari Derfel to give a slide show and presentation on June 27, at 7 p.m.
Derfel will share photographs and information about some of his favorite Northern California destinations for three- and four-day backpacking trips.
