New policemen receive diplomas
On June 16, two Sunnyvale Public Safety Department recruits graduated from the San Jose Police Graduation. Twenty-nine San Jose Police recruits also crossed the stage. Speakers at the event included San Jose Mayor Ron Gonzales, San Jose Police Chief William M. Lansdowne, and Sunnyvale Public Safety Department Chief Ernie Bakin. The graduates represent the first class from the San Jose Police Academy as its own academy. Previously, it had been operating under the auspices of the South Bay Regional Training Center.
FUHSD employees given honors
Account Analyst Michael Claus was honored as the Fremont Union High School District's Classified Employee-of-the-Year and Harry Unsinger, community school teacher, was honored as the Fremont Union High School District's Teacher-of-the-Year at district office by the Board at its meeting on June 6. Claus started working in the district more than four years ago. He has been an account analyst for three years and enjoys the challenges of solving problems relating to benefits and providing the best possible customer service to all employees. This year, Claus has been a member of the CSEA negotiating team, where he is known as the "spreadsheet guy." Claus, an avid bowler, has bowled in many state and national tournaments including the American Bowling Congress. He and his wife, Patty, have two children, Michael and Kelly.
Unsinger is a graduate of the District's Lynbrook High School and began his teaching career in the District in 1997 as a social science teacher at Homestead High School. In 1998, the Board approved the community school, and Unsinger was asked to be the teacher. He spent the summer of '98 building the curriculum and developing the program. The community school serves students who have been expelled from the District, where a determination is made that the community school program will best meet their educational needs during the term of expulsion. Unsinger served in the Coast Guard for eight years before becoming a teacher. He and his wife, Kristine, have a son, Kyle.
