Santa Clara Sonics win CYSA Cup title

    By Dick Sparrer

There weren't many soccer players in the Central Coast Section better than Mitty's Monika Sola last winter.

In fact, there was no better player in the junior class.

At least, that's how the coaches of the CCS saw it when they selected the talented defender as the junior of the year on the all-CCS team.

Sola, a Saratoga resident, helped the Monarchs win a CCS championship this past season and won all-league and all-CCS honors for her efforts.

Now Sola joins with other area all-leaguers and all-CCS players as a member of the Santa Clara Sonics, a girls under-17 CYSA soccer team. And the winning continues.

The Sonics crushed the Clovis Heat 7-0 to claim their second straight CYSA State Cup championship. With the win, the Sonics advance to the regionals that were to begin on June 18.

Sola is joined on the Sonics squad by Mitty teammates Kate Morgan, Mari Gomes, Heidi Spink and Lana Bowen.

Yvonne Bailey and Katie Fyall of Monta Vista, Laura Phan of Homestead, Keala Meyer of Saratoga, Marina Karzag and Jaclyn Campi of St. Francis, Alex Gaudiani of Menlo, Marie McCann of Santa Cruz, Kristen Carpenter of Harbor and Megan Gurney, Megan Chimenti Alyssa Sololik of Presentation are other members of the championship squad.

Carpenter, Morgan and Phan were other members of the all-CCS first team this past season, and McCann was picked to the second team.

Phan was the most valuable player in the El Camino Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League, and Bailey was the junior of the year in the De Anza Division of the SCVAL. Phan, Bailey, Fyall, Meyer, Karzag and Campi were each named all-leaguers in the SCVAL.

Mitty's Morgan was the most valuable player in the Mt. Hamilton Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League, and Sola and Gomes were named to the all-league first team.
