Murphy Avenue, Fair Oaks Park brighten up

The future is bright--not only for Fair Oaks Park, but also on Murphy Avenue after the Sunnyvale City Council accepted plans to install lights in both areas when it adopted next year's fiscal budget at its June 16 meeting.

Athletes and organizers from the Sunnyvale Pop Warner League requested lights at Fair Oaks Park in February. Initially, councilmembers passed on the idea when the city priced installation of the lights at $318,00 and maintenance at $39,000 annually.

Chances for the lights dimmed again when the proposed budget did not follow the city manager's recommendation to fund the project. But after discussing the issue at the public hearing June 9, the council unanimously adopted the plan.

Murphy Avenue also will light up, thanks to Julia Miller. The councilwoman couldn't get support for her proposal at the time, so she asked City Manager Robert LaSala to research the issue before the final budget adoption.

Seven merchants sent letters to Miller in support of lights on Murphy. Miller suggested the city and merchants could share the expense.

LaSala said installation would cost $9,450 and maintenance would be $1,000.

"This will enhance the charm of Murphy Avenue and increase the safety for our residents," Miller said.
