The new and improved Washington Park will include an island adventure theme for its new playground.
Park renovation on schedule

Sunnyvale's Washington Park is under construction, and only the swimming pool will be accessible this summer. Residents should have full use of the park by next summer when the $1 million renovation is completed, said Robert Walker, Sunnyvale's interim director of parks and recreation.
"We feel the need to open it up as soon as possible. We're ahead of schedule so far," Walker said.
The tennis and basketball courts will probably be completed before the fields because the grass needs time to set.
So little league and other sports teams will have to wait until next year to play on the new fields. The new playground will be much larger, giving kids more room to play.
With an island adventure theme, the playground will feature a suspension bridge, a shipwreck, a tree fort and a treasure map, complete with buried treasure.
The play area will also have traditional swings and be accessible to disabled people, Walker said.
The picnic area will accommodate groups of up to 100, Walker said. The city will encourage larger groups to have events at Baylands Park.
"We will also have picnic tables scattered throughout the park so parents can picnic and watch their kids while they play," he said.
