Jazz group named best in U.S.

For the fifth time, De Anza College's Vocal Flight has been named the best collegiate vocal jazz group of the year in Down Beat magazine's Student Music Awards. April Henderson of Sunnyvale and David Duran of Cupertino are among the group's members.

Results of the 19th annual awards, judged by well-known vocal jazz artists, were published in Down Beat's May issue. The competition drew applicants from two- and four-year colleges throughout the United States.

De Anza's vocal jazz program also took top honors from Down Beat in 1987, 1991, 1993 and 1994.

Vocal Flight has already performed in Europe three times and will return to Germany and France for two weeks this summer. The tour is entirely funded by the students in the group.

"I truly look forward to presenting this outstanding vocal group to international audiences," said Roger Letson, director of vocal music at De Anza.

Community members will have the chance to hear Vocal Flight on Fri., June 28, at 7:30 p.m. in De Anza's Choral Hall. All three of the college's vocal jazz ensembles will perform. Tickets will be available at the door ($7 for general admission and $5 for students and seniors).
