The city of Sunnyvale has established a memorial fund in honor of librarian Marian Hartshorn, who died April 24.
The City Council voted unanimously June 11 to create the fund, which will be used to upgrade the collection and expand services and programs at the Sunnyvale Public Library, where Hartshorn worked for 22 years.
The city won't expend any general-fund monies to establish the fund; library administrators estimate that they can generate as much as $15,000 in contributions to the memorial.
During her tenure at the library, Hartshorn worked as a bookmobile librarian, children's librarian and supervisor of children's services. Over the last five years, she devoted much time and effort to making the library's Mi Biblioteca program, which provides services and materials for Latino children and families, a success.
Hartshorn was also active in the South Bay Cooperative Library System's multicultural and children's-services committees.
"She was very interested in materials of all kinds--books, audio tapes, video tapes, magazines and CDs--that fostered learning about diverse cultures of the world and understanding between different groups and individuals," administrative librarian Susan Denniston wrote in her report to the council. "Marian enjoyed planning programs for children and adults that taught people about the customs, languages, stories and traditions of many diverse cultural groups."
The memorial fund will be used in large part to purchase materials and develop programs to promote multicultural understanding in the Sunnyvale community. Donations can be made to the Marian Hartshorn Memorial Fund, Sunnyvale Public Libary, 665 W. Olive Ave, Sunnyvale, 94086.
