Boesch to resign from community growth post

    By Sam Scott

David Boesch, Sunnyvale's director of community development, is leaving the city to take over as Menlo Park's city manager. Boesch leaves Sunnyvale after almost four years of service.

"It's with some regret that I am leaving," Boesch said. "Sunnyvale is such a quality organization."

As director of community development, Boesch supervised 50 people who were responsible for long-range planning, development review, economic development, housing and neighborhood preservation.

Well-liked by staff and council alike, Boesch dealt with a variety of issues, ranging from concerns about "monster homes" to facilitating major projects, such as the redevelopment of downtown and the Moffett Park area.

His replacement will be named after a national search.

Boesch said he has had his eyes set on eventually taking a city manager's position since graduating from Harvard's Kennedy School of Public Policy in 1987.

The job in Menlo Park allows him to move up, without moving far. Prior to working in Sunnyvale, Boesch had worked in Colorado and New Hampshire. Boesch said his date of his departure remained uncertain but likely would be Aug.1.

Sunnyvale City Manger Bob LaSala said he wished Boesch the best and expected him to do well.

"He has all the attributes to be a very successful city manager," LaSala said. "We will miss him here in Sunnyvale."
