    Festivities set for Baylands Park

Food fun and festivities highlight this year's Independence Day celebration at Baylands Park. Scheduled activities include old fashioned games like sack racing and a three-legged race, a carnival midway, food booths, a pie-eating contest, music and entertainment. Admission is free, although there will be a small charge for games on the midway as well as a $3 fee per car in the parking area.

The star performance of the July 4 celebration comes in the form of 17-year-old blues guitar phenom, Corby Yates. Corby is a native of California, and despite making 100 appearances all over the country last year, manages to remain a full time high school student. He has won many awards, including an award given by Jimi Hendrix's surviving family and a $25,000 scholarship. For more information, call 408.730.7500.

    VTA schedules special service

Once again this year, Santa Clara Valley Transit Authority is providing extra bus and light rail service to Fourth of July festivities in downtown San Jose and Paramount's Great America. Trip planning information and ticket booths also will be available at the Ohlone/Chynowerth, Capitol, Curtner, Tamien, and downtown Mountain View stations.

Special Day Pass fares will be in effect system-wide on Independence Day.

Adult day passes are $2, youth passes, $1, and senior/disabled passes, $.50. Children younger than 5 are free.

Celebrants heading to the San Jose festival should get off at the convention center station and walk one block west on San Carlos street to Discovery Meadow. Fireworks start at approximately 9:50 p.m.

Valley residents heading to Great America on light rail should get off at the Great America station. All light rail service will stop for the duration of the fireworks displays.
