Taaffe neighborhood, city gear up for Fourth

Old fashioned Independence Day fun will abound in Sunnyvale this July 4.

The city plans to host its Fourth of July celebration on Sunday in Baylands Park, located on Caribbean Drive. More than 3,000 people are expected to attend.

Activities are planned for the whole family. For the children, there will be pony rides and a petting zoo, and for teens and adults, the city is setting up carnival games, food booths and astro jumps. Marie Callendar's is sponsoring a pie-eating contest.

Three local bands--Monkey, IBOPA and Millennium Funk Party--will perform on the main stage.

The festivities begin at 11 a.m. and go until 5 p.m. Although admission is free, the carnival games and pony rides have a minimal fee attached, and parking costs $3.50. Due to limited parking, residents are encouraged to carpool.

    For more information, call 730-7350.

Meanwhile, Kim Moya's neighborhood will be celebrating Independence Day on a smaller scale. For the fifth year in a row, Moya and her neighbors are organizing a party on the 500 block of Taaffe Street in Sunnyvale for the Fourth of July. The city will cordon off the street from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

The highlight of the day is expected to be a children's parade,

which will march the length of the blocked-off street. Organizers are also planning volleyball games and other outdoor activities, including a potluck barbecue. Neighbors usually drape large flags across neighborhood trees in the morning, adding to the festive air.

Usually, between 50 to 75 people show up, according to Moya. She makes T-shirts for everybody, and, each year, she takes a group picture. "It's great to be able to get together with the neighbors. Usually everybody's working," Moya said. "It's really fun."

    Fremont grad wins contest

Jannis Jocius, a recent graduate from Fremont High School, recently won honorable mention in a national photography contest sponsored by the American Library Association (ALA).

Jocius entered the competition after she won first prize in a contest at the Sunnyvale library for her photograph entitled "Imagination."

The "Beyond Words" contest kicked off in January at local libraries, which announced winners during National Library Week in April. Libraries then submitted their first place winners, including Jocius, to ALA for national judging. Over 200 photographs were submitted.

Jocius will receive $150 for her honorable mention, and her photo along with other prize-winners will be shown at the ALA conference in New Orleans this month and will be posted at www.ala.org/celebrating/photo for the next couple months.

    KIDZ hits the road, again

KIDZ on Tour, a group of performers between the ages of 8 and 14, are getting ready to kick off their Disney Spectacular, a 20-minute song and dance revue with selections from Disney classics. They will be performing throughout the Bay Area through July. The youth group travels the Bay Area twice a year with performances at festivals, company parties, senior facilities, parks and recreation events and shopping centers. Both the resident director and musical director of KIDZ on Tour are Sunnyvale residents. For more information phone (408) 735-8515.
