Chubby's Broiler II is a newly opened burger joint with Japanese lanterns hanging overhead and teriyaki chicken on its menu.

Located at the corner of Tasman Drive and Lawrence Expressway in Sunnyvale, Chubby's Broiler II--the successor to the now defunct Chubby's Broiler I in Mountain View--opened its doors on June 7.

Made up of foods from buttermilk pancakes to breakfast burritos to 10 different kinds of burgers, the menu is large and as diverse as the restaurant's decor. And it's reasonably priced. A breakfast sandwich is under $3; a burger, under $5. The restaurant also offers two grand-opening specials: a free soda with any lunch or dinner order, and 20 percent off all breakfast orders.

According to Kevin Phan, son of owner Dennis Phan, everything is freshly cooked. "We cook [meals] as people order them," Phan said.

The Phan family opened Chubby's Broiler II after the first restaurant closed two months ago, because of the loss of its lease. The Phans have owned the restaurant for the last 10 years, but Chubby's Broiler is older even than that. "The business itself has been open for 40 years," Phan said. "The man who originally started it retired, and we bought it from him."

The new Chubby's Broiler is conveniently located, says Phan. "We relocated from Mountain View to this location because there are lots of companies around here to serve," Phan said. There is also the nearby Lakewood residential area. The best part of owning the restaurant, according to Phan, is the "ability to serve the working people. Especially in this new area, where we get to serve the residential community too."

"My parents started by working in restaurants. They think it's the best business for them," Phan said.

Chubby's Broiler is at 1135 Tasman Drive, near the corner of Tasman and Lawrence Expressway, Sunnyvale. Open Monday through Friday 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Breakfast is served until 11 a.m. Weekend hours are Saturday 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. For information call 752-0866.
