City prepares a fantastic fourth

By MICHELLE KU

Sunnyvale's annual Fourth of July celebration will have three focal points: entertainment, carnival games and food.

But Patrick Flanders, who's coordinating the event for the Sunnyvale Parks and Recreation Department, says the main focus is on the entertainment, which will be available in many forms for all age groups.

Dr. Loco's Rockin' Jalapeño Band, a nationally known salsa, rock and jazz band, is set to perform, along with Mojo Madness, a local band that plays funk and rhythm and blues.

"The bands create a fun atmosphere," Flanders says. "The music encourages people to get up and dance."

For younger folks, Circus Soozee will perform a clown act that includes traditional magic tricks and juggling.

"She's far and away the best kids' entertainer that our staff has come across in years," Flanders says.

There will also be pony rides, petting zoo, Astro Jumps and carnival games.

"We're trying to [hold] a small-town celebration," says Roxanne Howe-Murphy, acting marketing manager for the parks and recreation department. "We wanted to give it a small-town feel."

Barbecue and other picnic-style food will be prepared by Wild Woody's Grill. There will also be a beer booth.

The city will not be including a fireworks show as part of its Fourth of July celebration.

"Sunnyvale has a city ordinance against fireworks," Flanders says. "We figure that we'll let the other cities take care of that."

Admission to the celebration is free, but there is a charge for the food and the carnival games. Tickets for the game booths are 25 cents each or five tickets for $1. The pony rides are $3, and the petting zoo is free.

The celebration is set to run from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Sunnyvale Community Center at 550 E. Remington Drive. Parking will be available at the Community Center

Call the center at 730-7350.
