    ZIP code change takes effect

This month, a portion of Sunnyvale will change ZIP codes. Due to Sunnyvale's recent growth, and to meet future demands, the U.S. Postal Service found it necessary to establish additional ZIP codes for the community.

The City of Sunnyvale will now be divided into two different ZIP codes: 94085 and 94086. The east/west dividing line will be the Central Expressway. The north portion of the zone will be 94085 and the south section will be 94086.

A process called ZIP Translation will recognize the new and old ZIP code for 24 months. However, postal customers are encouraged to notify their correspondents of their new mailing address in order to avoid disruptions in their mail service.

    Plane makes emergency stop

A small Avions P. Robbin R21-60 private plane made an emergency landing at 11:35 on Thursday morning on the northbound side of State Highway 85. The plane reportedly had run out of power and received clearance to touch down on the highway. The highway remained open while the plane sat on the right-hand shoulder and jutted out into just one lane. Once a heavy-duty, flatbed truck arrived on the scene, the highway was temporarily closed and the plane was hauled off to nearby Moffet Field. There were no injuries reported.

Orchard housing complex opens waiting list

On Friday, July 14, Orchard Gardens, an affordable housing-apartment complex owned by a nonprofit housing developer, will open their waiting list to the public. Located at 245 W. Weddell St. near the intersection of Mathilda Ave. and Highway101, Orchard Gardens is a 62-unit complex that offers housing on an "income qualify" basis. If your gross income is below $36,540, or if your household includes two incomes which together are less than $41,760, you are eligible to qualify for this affordable housing.

Although there are no actual openings for apartments, this tax-credit program is accepting waiting-list additions which only happens once or twice a year due to the demand for such low-cost housing.

Apartment prices start at $644 for a one bedroom apartment for a tenant with a single income below the specified requirement. Call 408.744.1105 for more information.
