    Neighbors gather & celebrate

    By Joann Liao

Cotton candy smells wafted through the crowds, accompanied by laughter and music. A carnival atmosphere reigned in Sunnyvale's Baylands Park on Independence Day as more than 4,000 people celebrated the Fourth of July at the city-sponsored event.

Live music from three local bands accompanied residents as they played carnival games and sampled from the food booths. Monkey, IBOPA and Millenium Funk performed on the main stage in the park. According to Kristin Mingst, chair of the Fourth of July activities, over 100 teens turned out to hear the bands. "We had a really good group of teens," she said. "There were more teens than we usually get."

Along with the usual games and astro jumps, Marie Callendar's sponsored a pie-eating contest. Prizes included swim passes, golf passes and T-shirts.

"The pie-eating contest was a lot of fun," said Mingst.

Pony rides and a petting zoo completed the amusement list. "The pony rides were really popular," said Mingst.
