Homestead wind ensemble gets ready to play in Australia
A 50-student wind ensemble from Homestead High School is performing in the International Music Festival in Sydney, Australia, this week. This performance is the centerpiece of the students' trip, which also includes stops in Cairns, Australia, and New Zealand.
For the music festival performance, which is the largest scheduled, the band sent in a tape as an audition. The group will join other bands from around the world in the festival before moving on to other venues.
John Burn, the ensemble's conductor, said the musicians will perform a total of five concerts and will attend concerts and two workshops during the trip.
Patent director visits Sunnyvale
Don Kelly, director of the United States Patent and Trademark Office's inventor programs, will be speaking at Sunnyvale's SC[i]3 Thursday, July 8th.
Kelly will be joined by other expert colleagues from the Patent and Trademark Office speaking on "Innovating to Keep Up With America's Individual Inventors." The discussion will touch on improving communications, education and support for inventors as well as tips for effective correspondence with the
Patent and Trademark Office. The talk will also include pointers on conducting patent searches on the Internet.
The discussion will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. at the SC[i]3 office, 465 South Mathilda Ave., suite 300. The cost is $25. For more information, call SC[i]3 at 737-4945, or email seminars@sci3.com.
Students achieve high scores on German exam
Six students in the Fremont Union High School District scored in the 90th percentile or higher in the national German examination. Vivian Endisch, Nathan Eno, Alain Gyger, Marko Nozica, Renee Pasman and Philip Snowberger are all students of Cupertino High School. They were among the 23,793 students nationwide who participated in this year's testing program, administered by the American Association of Teachers of German.
