Formosa, Ross spark White Sox to victory
By Dick Sparrer
There's no substitute for speed.
The Sunnyvale White Sox know it. And now, so does the East Hills Little League.
Speedster Mario Formosa beat out an infield hit in the bottom of the seventh to knock in Sean Ross with the winning run in a 5-4 Sunnyvale victory over East Hills in Big League Division play.
East Hills had tied the game 4-4 in the sixth, but Ross singled to open the seventh. He stole second and moved to third on a sacrifice.
Formosa came up with two out and chopped a high bouncer to the infield. But he raced down the line to beat it out for a single, and Ross came home with the winning run.
A two-run single by Jon Frecceri had sparked a four-run rally in the first for the White Sox, and that's how it remained until East Hills tied it in the sixth.
Formosa was the winning pitcher for Sunnyvale, retiring the final five batters of the game.
The Sox came back with their ninth straight win a few days later when they beat Milpitas North Little League 9-6 in the first game of a doubleheader.
Sunnyvale's winning streak came to an end a game later when the Sox lost 10-3 to Milpitas. The North Big Leaguers are the defending District 59 champions.
The White Sox, now 11-3, are just one win away from clinching the District 44 crown.
