Award honors leading citizen
The Sunnyvale Chamber of Commerce is accepting nominations for the ATHENA award, to be presented Sept. 21 at Showcase Sunnyvale, the chamber's annual awards dinner. Nominees should be individuals who have achieved excellence in their profession, served the community in a meaningful way and assisted women in reaching their full potential.
The Sunnyvale Sun and Pearson Oldsmobile-Pontiac-GMC are co-sponsoring the award presentation. Nominations should be submitted by Sept. 4 to the Sunnyvale Chamber of Commerce, 499 S. Murphy Ave. For more information, call 736-4971.
NOVA receives federal grant
Sunnyvale's NOVA Private Industry Council was among 12 government and community agencies across the country to receive a grant from the U.S. Department of Labor's Employment and Training Administration last week.
NOVA received $235,480 to develop a fee-for-service system designed for Silicon Valley high-tech firms.
NOVA Director Mike Curran said the new system will allow the employment-services center to maintain its current service levels in the face of decreased government funding without hitting up taxpayers. Instead, companies will be asked to submit ideas for job-training and placement activities that could pay for themselves.
NOVA will also use the grant monies to develop a marketing strategy for its new system.
"We want to find a better way to communicate to the private sector what we have to offer," Curran said.
