Sunnyvale Metro hurler Larry Witkovski tossed his club to an 11-0 win over Tri-Cities in the District 44 major division all-star tournament.
Bergeron, Reiglar pitch a no-hitter
There weren't many hits when the major division all-star teams from Sunnyvale Southern and Tri-Cities went head-to-head in a District 44 Little League game last week.
Weren't many? Heck, there was only one!
But the Southern gang made that one hit stand up for a victory in a 1-0 thriller against Tri-Cities in all-star play.
Dan Bergeron and Chris Gandelman locked horns in a classic pitchers duel.
Gandelman gave up just one hit and struck out 11 in five innings of work, but he was tagged with the heartbreaking loss when Bergeron and Casey Reigler combined to toss a no-hitter.
Bergeron fanned nine in five innings of no-hit pitching, and Reigler came on in the sixth to help nail down the win and complete the no-hitter. Reigler struck out a pair.
In other major division all-star play, Chris Kropf doubled and singled twice to drive in three runs and lead the Sunnyvale Metro all-stars to an 11-0 win over Tri-Cities. Larry Witkovski tossed three-plus innings to get the win, fanning six and allowing no hits.
In another major game, Los Altos pounded Sunnyvale Serra 19-1 in four innings.
Ryan Matsuoka had three hits to knock in two runs and was the game's winning pitcher when Santa Clara Homestead knocked off Sunnyvale Serra 6-2 in the 9-10 age division tournament last week.
Ronald Wu had two hits in the game for Serra and Tim Vanderet ripped a double. Sam Wood struck out five, but was the tough pitching loss.
In other District 44 9-10 age division action, Los Altos #1 pulled out a thrilling 6-5 win over Santa Clara Briarwood-El Camino in seven innings; Santa Clara Homestead defeated Tri Cities 8-1; Briarwood topped Los Altos #2 9-2; and Campbell handled Mountain View 9-6.
