Wegener sparks Metro to win over Moreland
By Dick Sparrer
Adam Wegener was right in the middle of things--at least he was every time the Sunnyvale Metro Little League all-stars were scoring runs in their District 44 12-year-old tournament opener last week.
Wegener doubled in a three-run first, homered in a four-run second and a singled in a four-run fourth to lead Metro to a lopsided 11-1 win over Moreland.
Wegener was three-for-three and drove in three runs for Metro in the victory.
Kevin Jurovich singled and Wegener doubled to key the first-inning rally for Sunnyvale.
But the Metro gang was finished yet. Bryan Fracchia singled and Jurovich walked before Wegener homered in the second to help Sunnyvale open up a commanding 7-0 lead.
Moreland got a run back in the third, but Metro rallied for four more in the fourth. Singles by Wegener and Ryan Boardman and doubles by Chip Lewis and David Gale sparked the rally.
That was more than enough support for pitcher Jeff Gordon. He blanked Moreland in the fourth, and Metro won on the 10-run rule.
Gordon finished up with a two-hitter, striking out 10 in the four inning game.
Cupertino American, meanwhile, opened the tournament with back-to-back wins, beating Sunnyvale Southern 4-1 and Sunnyvale Serra 3-1.
Martin Wan went the distance to toss a six-hitter in Cupertino American's 4-1 win over Southern. Wan struck out 13 in the win.
The clubs were locked in a scoreless tie heading into the last of the fifth. Curtis Oliver reached first on an error to get things started. Pinch hitter Derek Heidinger and Doug Bitney each singled to load the bases before Michael Thurman ripped a two-run single and Michael Laughlin singled home another run.
Southern got a run back in the top of the sixth when Chris Bailey and Jeff Hungerford each singled and Daniel DeZordo's fly ball was lost in the sun. But that was all Sunnyvale could muster.
Bailey and Willie Hayes had two hits apiece for Sunnyvale, and Kosoglow finished with a six-hitter.
Dana Silveria came back with a four-hitter, striking out 10, to lead Cupertino American to the 3-1 win over Serra.
Brandon Parisi tripled and scored on a two-out single by Joey Reyes in the sixth to break up Silveria's bid for a shut out, but that was all Serra could manage.
Larry Handy, Craig Moberg and Reyes teamed to toss a five-hitter for Serra in the loss. The three combined for eight strikeouts.
Sunnyvale National lost its District 44 opener, falling 10-0 to powerful Campbell.
