News Brief

Council will hold hearings July 22

After a break for summer session, the Sunnyvale City Council will resume meetings on July 22. On the agenda for the evening are public hearings for a possible increase in utility taxes, approval of the Moffett Advisory Report and development of a Target Superstore at Olson's Orchard.

The utility tax hike, in response to the drop in electric bills because of deregulation, would go into effect as soon as residential consumer bills drop 10 percent or commercial bills drop 30 percent. The increase would raise the utility tax one-third of 1 percent for residents, meaning that instead of saving 9.8 percent on electric bills, consumers would save 9 percent.

After nearly a year of fact-finding, the Moffett Advisory Committee finished its report on possible uses of Moffett Field. The report suggested the use of the airfield for air cargo as well as commercial transport of Lockheed and NASA products. The council will review the report and present the most viable option to NASA.

The fate of Olson's Orchard, the last orchard in town, will be discussed at the meeting. The orchard was put up for sale because the owners could no longer afford to run it. An application to build a Target Superstore is currently in front of the council.

The City Council meeting begins at 7 p.m. in the City Hall Council Chambers.
