Ike Cosse lays the groove down during the Wednesday kick-off of "Midweek Market and Music Madness"

Midweek market offers locals, commuters music, munchies and more

World-weary workers and locals looking for a little jam with their fruits and veggies headed to downtown Sunnyvale last Wednesday for the inaugural "Midweek Market and Music Madness". A hump day cousin of the popular Saturday morning farmers' market, the midweek market offered many of the same outlets for fresh fruits and veggies Sunnyvale residents have come to love, sprinkled with just the right amount of arts, crafts and live music.

Suzi Blackman, president of the Sunnyvale Chamber of Commerce, said she was very pleased with the market's initial draw. An estimated 2,000 to 3,000 folks flooded Murphy Avenue and Washington Street Wednesday, close to the average number who roll out of bed early for the Saturday market.

Locals grooved to the live rock and soul tunes while pawing the piles of produce. Dancing in the aisles of local grocery outlets usually is frowned upon, but none of the downtown vendors gave a second glance to those who chose to boogie with their broccoli.

Blackman says the Sunnyvale Downtown Association needs the support of the community to keep the Wednesday market going. Organizers hope Caltrain commuters will take time to check out the local flavor before jumping the last train home. They also hope the market will offer merchants an alternative spot to sell their wares during large construction projects set to start downtown later this summer.

Midweek Market and Music Madness takes place every Wednesday for 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Bands scheduled to perform include Dan Hicks & The Acoustic Warriors on July 19 and David Ladd & the Downtown Allstars on July 26. To accommodate the madness, Murphy Avenune and Washington Street will be blocked off during the market.
