    Roberts charged with public drunkenness

More than seven months after being arrested for allegedly hitting and refusing to pay a cab driver while drunk, Sunnyvale City Councilmember Jim Roberts will be called before a Santa Clara County court of law on July 24. The Santa Clara County district attorney's office last week filed one misdemeanor charge for public drunkenness against Roberts. Originally, police also cited Roberts for battery and defrauding the cab driver when he was arrested in December.

Prosecutor David Howe declined to comment on why the other two charges were dropped. He also wouldn't say why it took so long to take any action in the case. Roberts, the longest-serving member of the council, had vowed he would plead not guilty to all charges, but has refused to comment on recent developments. If convicted, Roberts could face up to six months in jail.

    Pool receives state funding

Friends of the Fremont Pool received some good news last week. Gov. Gray Davis approved the portion of the state budget which allotted $350,000 for the pool. The group has now raised $600,000 of their pledged mark of $1,000,000. Funding was supported by State Senator John Vasconcellos and Assemblywoman Elaine Alquist.
