Ryan Lee proved too much for the Sunnyvale Southern Little League junior all-stars to handle last Friday night. And because of it, the Los Altos juniors advanced to the District 44 championship game.

Lee was the winning pitcher and also tripled and singled twice to lead Los Altos to a 16-2 win over Southern.

The loss dropped Southern into the tournament's loser's bracket. The Sunnyvale 'stars were to meet Sunnyvale Serra on Sunday, with the winner to face Los Altos in the title game on July 18, 5:30 p.m. at the Sunnyvale National field. Unbeaten LA must be beaten twice to lose the title, and the "if necessary" game is slated for July 19, 5:30 p.m. on the same field.

Serra earned a place in the loser's bracket finals with a tight 7-4 win over Cupertino American on Friday.

American actually jumped on top with three runs in the first. Serra tied the game with single runs in the second, third and sixth, only to see American score again in the home half of the sixth to lead 4-3. But Serra put the game away with a four-run rally in the seventh.

Serra had knocked off Cupertino National a game earlier, rallying for four in the eighth to claim a 12-8 victory.

The Serra all-stars opened the tournament with a 16-4 loss to Cupertino American, but they've fought back with three straight wins to stay alive in the tourney.

Serra beat Tri-Cities 13-3 to open play in the loser's bracket.

Brian Fracchia was four-for-four in the win and Knopf singled and doubled twice to knock in six runs.

Sunnyvale Southern opened the tourney with a 13-1 win over Tri-Cities, then beat Cupertino American 9-4 before falling to Los Altos.

American rallied for a 7-5 win over Sunnyvale National to stay alive in the tournament, only to lose a game later to Serra.
