Five take out papers in City Council race
By Natasha Collins
It is election time again in Sunnyvale, and the rumors about who is going to be running to fill the three available seats have begun to surface.
So far five potential candidates have picked up applications from the city clerk, but this does not mean they will be in the race once campaigning begins.
In order to be eligible to run for office, a candidate must be at least 18 years old and a registered voter in Sunnyvale. To waive the $12,000 filing fee, candidates must have at least 250 signatures and file an application to run, said Carol Butler of the city clerk's office, who is in charge of the election.
To be considered a candidate, contenders must also get 20 signatures on their nomination papers.
Those running for seats No. 2 and 3--those currently held by Robin Parker and Jim Roberts--must have their applications in by Aug. 8. Those interested in running for seat No. 1, now held by Landon Noll, must have their signatures gathered and paperwork in by Aug. 13.
Fred Fowler, president of the Lakewood Village Neighborhood Association and a member of the Housing and Human Services Commission, and Kayvan Navai, who owns the Village Inn restaurant in Towne Center, have picked up applications to run for seat No. 1, Butler said.
Two applicants--Ken Bruce and Julia Miller--have picked up papers for Parker's seat. Miller ran for City Council several years ago.
Roberts, currently vice mayor of Sunnyvale, is running for re-election and is unchallenged at this time.
Rumors that Frances Rowe, the former mayor of Sunnyvale who was asked to leave the council, will be running for Roberts' seat are untrue, Rowe said.
"I think I would be a good match for Roberts," Rowe said, "but my mission is to clean up City Hall, not be a member of it."
Rowe is involved in a lawsuit against the city and is investigating the operating practices of the City Council and staff.
Campaign packets are available at Sunnyvale City Hall in the city clerk's office.
