MV gets new 650 area code

As of August 1, half of the area formerly serviced with the 415 area code will be using the 650 area code.

The new code will serve San Mateo County and the portion of Santa Clara County that uses 415 right now. The area code change will affect cities like Mountain View, Los Altos, Palo Alto, Menlo Park, Redwood City, San Carlos, Half Moon Bay and San Mateo.

The 415 area code will remain in San Francisco, Marin County and parts of Daly City and Brisbane.

The reason for the area code split is due to the influx of people into the areas. As the phone companies run out of new telephone numbers, they need to split up codes to allow more people to have new numbers.

After August 1, if you're trying to call someone in the new 650 area code, you will still be able to reach them using 415. There is a six-month period following the change during which phone numbers within the new area can be reached using either 415 or 650, so if you're unsure whether a telephone number is affected, don't worry about using the wrong code.

After February 1, 1998, if you dial 415 in the new 650 area, you will reach a recorded message indicating your error. Telephone calls to 650 will cost the same as they previously did.
