Donation helps SCS help kids during summer

Sunnyvale Community Services has initiated the Kids Summer Food Program in response to the additional financial burden faced by low-income families when their kids are out of school.

During the summer, parents must find additional child care and replace the one or two meals that had been provided to the children at school. More than 38 percent of the students in the Sunnyvale School District qualify for free or reduced-price breakfasts and lunches at school, said Nancy Tivol, executive director of Sunnyvale Community Services.

The Kids Summer Food Program came about after Smythe European car dealership donated more than $5,000 to SCS. SCS, a nonprofit organization that helps more than 500 families each month, would like to increase the number of people it is currently serving. To that end, the organization is having a raffle to raise much-needed funds. One lucky winner will be able to select a Mercedes C230, a Volvo 850 or $20,000. Tickets are $25 each or five for $100. For tickets, send checks to Sunnyvale Community Services, 810 W. McKinley Ave., Sunnyvale, 94086. Food donations are always welcomed at SCS.
