Astros win title

The Sunnyvale Astros didn't need a win last weekend to claim the championship in the Southern Division of the Joe DiMaggio Baseball League--they needed two!

What's more, they needed those two wins against first-place San Carlos in a Sunday doubleheader at Homestead.

Ben Amiwero and Lamar Harvey flipped back-to-back shutouts to help the Astros sweep the Sunday twin bill at Homestead.

Sunnyvale won the opener 7-0, then took the nightcap 9-0, to wrap up the division title in the Peninsula DiMaggio League.

Bryan McCann blasted a long home run to key a fifth-inning rally that saw the Astros bat around in the 7-0 win. A triple by Brett Erickson and a run-scoring single by Luke Donigian that plated Gabe Duran were other big hits in the rally.

Harvey drove in a pair of runs with a bases-loaded single in the second, and Kayzell Milton scored a big run on a single, two stolen bases and a throwing error.

A run-scoring single by Nick Duran and a two-run single by Erickson helped the Astros to a 9-0 win in the second game.

The Astros had won two of four games earlier in the week, splitting a doubleheader with Menlo, beating South City 4-3 and battling Menlo Park to a 5-5 tie in a game called because of darkness.

Tony Plant and McCann teamed up to toss the Astros to the win over South City.

The Astros opened the week fighting Menlo to a 5-5 tie. G. Duran ripped a two-run single in the game.
