Girls win hoop title

The South Bay Spirit, a girls' team that featured talented high school basketball players from the Santa Clara Valley, coasted to the championship in a summer tournament in Phoenix, Ariz.

The Spirit clinched the title with a 41-35 win over the San Diego Showcase in the finals. Prospect's Ami Forney and Presentation's Molly Shanley pitched in eight points apiece in the championship game. Mitty's Jenn Glysson added five points for the winners and Homestead's Hilary Parker hit two.

Kari Santibanes of Presentation and Annie Garrison of Monta Vista were other members of the squad.

The Spirit had earned a spot in the title game with a 45-9 win over Oregon Power Red in the quarterfinals and a 52-30 victory over South Oregon Power in the semi's.

Youth ice hockey

The Santa Clara Valley Hockey Association will hold skills clinics and scrimmages throughout the summer at the Iceoplex in Fremont and at the Eastridge Ice Arena.

Ice hockey skills clinics are helds Sundays through the end of August at the Iceoplex. Mites and squirts are on the ice 10:30-11:30 a.m., with the pee wees, bantams and midgets in action 11:45 a.m.-12:45 p.m.

Hockey scrimmages for mites through midgets are held Saturdays, 7:30-9 a.m., at Eastridge and Thursdays, 7:45-9 p.m., at the Iceoplex.

De Anza Tennis Camp

A youth tennis camp will be held at De Anza College in Cupertino Aug. 5-9. The camp runs 3:30-5:30 p.m. each day, and the cost is $60 per player. For more information, call Coleen Lee-Wheat at 864-8744.

Kennedy hoop camp

The Kennedy Basketball Camp for boys and girls ages 8-16 will be held Aug. 5-9,
9 a.m.-4 p.m. each day, at the Kennedy Junior High School gym in Cupertino.

The camp is for players of all skill levels. The cost is $115. For more information, call 255-7443.

Bob Elliot pulled out a 5-iron and knocked in a hole-in-one on the 149-yard fourth hole at Sunnyvale Municipal Golf Course recently.
